"Lucky Gallon"

"Lucky Gallon"

Completed 2012

Painting dimensions 18" x 24" acrylic on gessoboard.

In 1946, Cook Cleland flew his first air racer, an F-G1D Corsair, to an unimpressive sixth place finish in the Thompson Trophy Race with an average speed of 357 mph. He went on to succeed at the Cleveland races with his "Super Corsairs," but none were prettier than the cream and maroon "Lucky Gallon." It is depicted on a test flight prior to the 1946 race.
