Since being a kid, I've always been a serious unlimited air racing fan. Racer #69 "Jeannie" and her pilot Skip Holm are favorites of mine. I’ve had the chance to watch the pair compete and win some awesome victories at the Reno Unlimited Championship Races. Jeanie and Skip are truly legends of aviation.
When I read the Air Classics’ incredible true story about the air-to-air photo mission with Jeannie, Skip, and the Skunkwork’s SR-71 “house bird,” I knew I had to paint the scene.
Featured, is an impossible shot from the actual photo mission. The scene shows the “house bird” nose high and struggling to stay with Jeannie, who is at max power and nose tucked while she streams cooling vapor. The photo plane, one of two T-38s from Palmdale, Calif. provides a stable platform for the once in a lifetime photo shoot.
