This painting is based on references provided by my friend Tony from his time assigned to CV-63 USS Kitty Hawk (1973-1975). The aircraft is a North Amercan Aviation RA-5C Vigilante assigned to RVAH-6 (Reconnaissance Attack Heavy Squadron). The aircraft has just cleared the deck, the engines are in full after burner mode, the elevators are in full nose up position and the landing gear has "thunked" into full extention. A lot of things happen really fast during a carrier launch or landing. The Vigilante was a very advanced aircraft for its day, and many of its design features would appear in future fighter/attack aircraft such as the F-14 and F-15.
