Lambert Field bound
Winner of the Founders Gold award at the 2024 ASAA forum and exhibition.
Growing up in St Louis Missouri I became enamored with the only home-grown airline, Ozark Airlines, operating out of Lambert Field. In the seventies the field was wide open to photographers, and I got my full dose of Ozark's DC-3s, Fairchild-Hiller FH-227s, and DC-9s. The Gooneys were always my favorite, as the first airplane flight I took was with my grandfather when I was eight years old, on an American Airlines DC-3 from St Louis to Detroit. This unidentified DC-3 approaching Lambert Field has a cable cutter/deflector center windscreen frame, twin ADF "Footballs", landing gear doors/fairings and a different exhaust and oil cooler intake than most of the Ozark fleet.
