On October third 1953, US Navy Pilot LCDR Jim Verdin set a new world speed record of 753.4 mph in the second of two Douglas XF4D-1 Skyray prototypes. Designed by famed engineer Ed Heinemann, it was the first carrier based aircraft to hold this record. The record was made in the Salton Sea area south of Edwards AFB to take advantage of the high air temperature (lower air density) of the below sea level desert. Four passes were made in full afterburner through the course at approximately 100 above ground level. Production aircraft were known affectionately to pilots as the "Ford," and it was famous for being able to climb like a "bat out of hell."
