Solo Pass

The year is 1962 and the "City of Las Vegas", is being prepared for another public relations flight with invited guests attending the airshow. The Thunderbirds solo pilot is making a sneak high-speed pass while the four-ship diamond formation sets up for another maneuver. The highly polished C-54 was added to the team in 1959 and flew with them through 1963. 1956 saw the introduction of the North American F-100C Super Sabre to the Thunderbirds and it would serve them through the 1963 airshow season. The team would operate the impressive but problematic F-105B for two seasons, and then return to the F-100D Super Sabre. I was fortunate to see them perform in the F-100 at the St Louis fourth of July airshow in front of the newly finished Gateway Arch. It was a magnificent introduction to the thrill of afterburners and transonic jet sounds.
