Two of the Few
On the morning of June 4, 1942, a large force of Japanese aircraft attacked midway island. The pilots of Marine Fighting Squadron , VMF-221 scrambled to surprise the 36 Nakajima B5N2 Kate level bombers, 36 Aichi D3A1 Val dive bombers and 36 Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero escort fighters.
The marines were able to gain a height advantage and attacked with a mixed force of Brewster F2A-3 Buffalo and Grumman F4F-3 Wildcats. The Wildcats made a good showing, but the Buffalos were out matched in every respect and the Zeros had a field day with them.
This painting depicts Second Lieutenant Charles M. Kunz following Second lieutenant William V. Brooks badly damaged aircraft to land back on Midway after their first combat. Kunz was able to down two Vals and despite head wounds was able land his plane safely. He would later become the only American ace to score victories in the Buffalo.
